In related deaths. There is an increase of Mississippians living with type 2 diabetes complications that include: lower extremity amputations, end stage renal disease, blindness, loss of protective sensation, and heart disease. The financial impact of diabetes is significant. Medical expenditures for persons with diabetes are 2.3 times higher than those without the disease.

Helping persons with diabetes better manage their disease could reduce the morbidity, mortality and financial costs resulting from diabetes complications. This webinar will provide an overview of the Mississippi State Department of Health’s efforts to address the burden of diabetes through a diabetes self-management education (DSME) pilot program.

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the burden of diabetes in Mississippi and understand the importance of diabetes self-management education.
  2. Identify key components to successfully pilot a diabetes self-management curriculum in county health departments.
  3. Describe the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ DSME reimbursement policy.
